Testing For Bad Breath

Many people are not aware of how bad their breath can be until they are told. Even then they think that it is able to be cured by simply brushing their teeth. In order to best show them how bad it is you need to have them tested.

There are many methods used by professionals that will test for bad breath.

Gas Chromatographs

People used to use their noses in order to gauge how bad a person’s breath is. But this is not helpful for some people. Everyone has a different nose and some are more sensitive than others. For a more accurate reading they will use a gas chromatograph. This is used to identify the compounds that are found in one’s breath. These are expensive machines though and require a specialist to use them. Because of this most dentists do not have the ability to use them.

Halimeter

This is a type of sulfide monitor that was created in 1991. It helps to measure the amount of sulfide gases that is in someone’s breath. Most types of sulfide gases are the cause of bad breath. Someone with halitosis will have large amounts of it. The only problem with this method is that certain things people use and eat will affect the reading.

BANA Test

The BAMA test is used to measure and determine the waste products that are in the mouth and that could be causing the bad breath. They will test the bacteria that is contained within the mouth and it will help to determine how much is in and whether or not the person has chronic bad breath because of it.

Chemiluminescence

This is a more recent study that is used to test for the compounds that are connected to bad breath. It will take a sample that contain sulfur compounds and mix it with a mercury compound. It will cause a fluorescence that will determine how strong the sulfur compounds are. It is more accurate then the Halimeter.
